Roles and Responsibilities:
· Conduct testing and commissioning of Protection and Control systems within high-voltage substations.
· Perform hands-on protective relay testing on-site using relay test sets like Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150. This includes testing relays such as SEL-311L, SEL-387, SEL-487, SEL-421, SEL-351S, GE L90, GE D60, and others.
· Open to fieldwork, primarily in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, and other Mountain West region areas.
· Oversee the entire project scope, encompassing the testing and commissioning of protection and control systems in high-voltage substations for electric utilities and renewable energy plants.
· Plan, schedule, and coordinate outages for demolition, construction, and testing in utility substations.
· Coordinate and lead electricians, relay technicians, and commissioning engineers to ensure the proper installation, testing, and energization of new protection and SCADA systems.
· Provide field engineering support and verify wiring according to design drawings. Submit and track RFIs related to system design or implementation.
· Verify SCADA and DFR points, document results, and address discrepancies.
· Perform Job Hazard Analysis (JHA).
· Participate in virtual and on-site meetings related to the project, collaborating with project management and clients to identify and mitigate project risks and resolve scheduling conflicts.
· Maintain, sign off on, and deliver project record drawings and test documentation.
Required Education/Experience:
· Possess 10+ years of professional experience in the electrical testing industry.
· Demonstrated expertise in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing.
· Extensive experience in electric utility operations, substation construction, outage sequencing, and commissioning.
· Proficiency in transmission, substation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, GE families) and protective schemes.
· Experience in validating substation protection and control wiring.
· Technical skills related to protective relays, including relay calibration using test sets/measuring devices like Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, CT/PT circuit testing, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static and dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays.
· In-depth knowledge of electrical field-testing standards, practices, and procedures such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA standards.
· Familiarity with testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays, circuit breakers, transformer controls, SCADA systems, and DFRs.
· Experience in performing brownfield retrofits of relaying and equipment.
· Willingness to travel, with the potential for up to 85% travel time.
Desired Education/Experience:
· Possess a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a similar discipline.
· Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment in high-voltage substations, including CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems (batteries and battery chargers).
· Expertise in using the latest computer-controlled solid-state test equipment, such as automated protective relay test equipment like Omicron or Doble.
· Proficiency with NovaTech OrionLX and GE D20 equipment.
· Hold a Professional Engineer license (P.E.).
