This isn’t just another R&D job. It’s a chance to sit at the heart of a globally significant photonics program, where your designs will influence how data flows through AI, telecom, sensing, and beyond.

You’ll be joining a centre of excellence in Gent that’s already helped shape one sixth of the global photonics component market. Now they’re pushing into new territories: 6G photonics, optical DSP, photonic neural networks, 3D/4D imaging, and more.

What you’ll be doing:

You’ll work on complex, novel challenges where every component and circuit design brings new performance possibilities. In this role, you’ll:

· Lead concept development and new product projects from R&D to launch

· Design and model PICs and subsystems using leading-edge tools

· Define specs, test plans, and conduct statistical validation of measurements

· Architect PIC-based systems for advanced applications: AI, RF/mmWave, 6G, etc.

· Partner with global engineering teams to turn R&D into reality

· Contribute to research pipelines, literature reviews, and conference work

· Engage stakeholders to unlock funding and internal support for high-impact ideas

What you’ll need to bring:

· PhD in Photonics, EE, Physics, or similar, plus 5+ years’ industry experience

· Deep understanding of integrated optics and optoelectronic systems

· Proven design and test experience with silicon and III-V photonic components

· Knowledge of PIC integration with RF ICs and EICs for transceivers or sub-systems

· A track record of leading products into volume production

· Hands-on experience with:

o Modelling tools (Photon Design, Lumerical, COMSOL, CST)

o Layout tools (Luceda Ipkiss, Tanner L-Edit)

o Python or VPI software (a bonus)

· Excellent communication skills; including securing funding for R&D projects

· Business-aware thinking and a customer-centric mindset
