Optical Payload Lead
I’m supporting a client in the European space sector developing satellite technology designed to collect high-precision atmospheric data from orbit. As their programme expands, they are looking to bring in a senior optical specialist to take ownership of an infrared spectrometric payload for a Low Earth Orbit mission.
The role
You would oversee the optical design and performance of the payload, from initial architecture through to testing and in-orbit validation.
Key aspects of the position include:
- Defining the optical architecture of an infrared spectrometer payload
- Working with detector technologies, telescopes, diffraction gratings and focal plane assemblies
- Developing performance models covering radiometry, spectral resolution, SNR and optical efficiency
- Producing optical simulations using tools such as Zemax or equivalent
- Setting technical requirements for mechanical, electronics and software teams
- Supporting hardware development, integration and environmental testing
- Contributing to calibration and validation activities once the satellite is operational
- Participating in trade-off studies and future instrument improvements
Profile
- Degree or PhD in optics, photonics, physics or a related discipline
- Around 4+ years of experience in optical system design, ideally with infrared instrumentation
- Experience contributing to payload or scientific instrument architecture
- Exposure to satellite or space hardware programmes is beneficial
Practical details
